Who is Simon?

He was one of Jesus’ twelve apostles. Jesus gave him a new name, Peter, which means “rock”. He appears in the Bible as Simon, Peter, Simon Peter, or Cephas.

What is important about this passage?

Jesus calls the first disciples to follow him. He also hints at their mission.

Who is Matthew?

He was one of the twelve apostles.

What is a tax collector?

The Romans were ruling over the Jewish people at this time. Tax collectors were Jewish men who worked for the Roman government. They would often overcharge on taxes and pocket the difference. Many Jewish people looked down on them.

What is important about this passage?

Jesus explains he has come for the “sick”. He has come for sinners and has no problem socializing with them.
