I’ve Got a Bible…Now What? Day 19

Read Acts 15:22-29

NIV Translation

ESV Translation

Genre: Narrative

For it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay on you no greater burden than these requirements…

Acts 15:28 (ESV)

What is a Gentile?

A Gentile is a person who isn’t Jewish.

What is important about this passage?

Christianity began as an offshoot of Judaism. This letter was sent out because some of the Jewish Christians wanted the non-Jewish Christians to follow Jewish laws and customs. However, the apostles decided that Gentiles (non-Jews) didn’t need to do that. This is why Christians do not have to follow most of the laws that are in the Old Testament (such as dietary laws). Many of these laws only apply to the Jewish people. The apostles only give four requirements: “abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals, and from sexual immorality”.

ESV Translation

But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.

Romans 7:6 (ESV)

What is important about this passage?

This passage also shows that Christians are not bound to the Jewish law found in the Old Testament.
