Who is Stephen?

The apostles chose seven men, deacons, who would make sure the widows received enough food. Stephen was one of these seven men. Stephen was brought before the Sanhedrin (court of Jewish elders) on charges of blasphemy.

What is important about this passage?

Stephen was the first Christian martyr. This passage also introduces Saul and the persecution of the early church.

Who is Saul?

Saul (also known as Paul) was a Pharisee. He worked against the early church and persecuted Jesus’ followers. After his conversion, he founded several churches and wrote most of the letters found in the New Testament.

What is “the Way”?

The first Christians weren’t called “Christians”. They were followers of “the Way”.

Who is Barnabas?

Barnabas was an early Christian. He and Paul traveled together and evangelized to the Gentile (non-Jewish) population.

What is important about this passage?

Saul’s conversion is a major turning point for the early church. He became a missionary and helped open the door for non-Jewish people to become Christians.
