What is important about this passage?

This is the “Great Commission”. Christians are baptized because Jesus instructed his apostles to baptize. He also told them to evangelize and teach others about him.

Genre: Epistle (Letter). This is a letter written by Paul to the Christians in Rome.

We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

What is important about this passage?

Paul explains that baptism is a way for Christians to participate in the death and resurrection of Jesus. In baptism, a person “dies” to their old life and has a new life as a Christian.

Genre: Historical narrative. Acts is the history of the early Christians just after Jesus’ resurrection.

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

What is important about this passage?

Jesus promises the Holy Spirit. He tells his followers that they will spread the gospel “to the ends of the earth”.
