What is a Samaritan?

The Samaritans lived in the same region as the Jewish people. They shared a religious history, but differed on many points (such as where God was–in Jerusalem or on Mt. Gerizim). Jewish people generally avoided socializing with Samaritans and had a negative view of them.

What is important about this passage?

This is one of the most famous parables (stories). It also illustrates how Jesus expects his followers to treat others.

Jesus repeatedly states that he has come for sinners. This is another example.
