Read John 1:1-18

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Who is the John this passage mentions?

John 6:6 refers to John the Baptist. He was a prophet during Jesus’ lifetime. He called the people to repentance and baptism in anticipation of Jesus beginning his ministry.

What is “the Word”?

Jesus is the Word. Several things are mentioned about the Word. The Word was present with God “in the beginning”. The Word made everything in the world. The Word “became flesh” (in other words, the Word became human).

What is the law?

Jesus was born into a Jewish community. The Jewish people followed “the law” which is found in some of the Old Testament books.

What is important about this passage?

This is one of the go-to scriptures in defense of the Trinity. This passage states that Jesus isn’t just the Son of God. Jesus is God.

The Word was God (John 1:1). John the Baptist testified about the Word (John 1:6-7). The Word became human (John 1:14). The Son is God (John 1:18).

Who is David?

David was the King of Israel (the Jewish people). Scripture said that a new King would come from the line of David.

Who is Jacob?

Jacob was the grandson of Abraham. Jacob was given the name Israel.

What is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. The Holy Spirit is God.

What is important about this passage?

This is one of the most well known scripture passages in Christianity. This passage establishes Jesus’ mother as a virgin and introduces the Holy Spirit.
